Composite Profiles and Longitudinal Data

We can assist your organization in charting leadership and organizational improvements over an extended period of time. Six years of longitudinal data can be profiled to show changes in the Organizational Health of a total system or subsystems. In the example below, only data for three of the seven years from a large public school system are shown below.
The graph above is based on the perceptions of approximately 50 principals over a seven-year period of time. (Due to space limitations, only three years of data are shown.) Some of the changes can be attributed to behavioral changes by their immediate supervisor and/or by principals, but the major changes occurred because of a structural change that was initiated at the end of the 1990-91 academic year.

Instead of the 35 principals reporting to the Director of Elementary and the 14 principals reporting to the Director of Secondary, each principal reported to one of the four Cluster Directors. Each cluster consisted of a high school and its feeder schools. Thus, the span of control was decreased from 35 to 12 or 13 for each of the K-12 clusters.

Since principals are the keys to effective schools, district administrators need to provide a positive and supportive environment for them. Not only were there significant improvements in the Organizational Health for principals, but the district's composite profile for all campuses also increased during this same period of time.

As one would expect, the district's overall improvements in student performance also closely paralleled these improvements in Organizational Health.
